Cricket Star Buys Vintage Land Rover

Cricket may not be something people want to think too much about after the Ashes, but away from the grim news down under, it should not be forgotten that even the top players have interests outside the sport.

Of course, there can be few better extracurricular pursuits than Land Rovers, a point on which former Indian captain and legend of the sport Mahendra Singh Dhoni would clearly agree.

Mr Dhoni has a large collection of cars and bikes, to which he has now added a vintage Land Rover Series 3 vintage SUV, dating from 1971. He bought it after being the successful bidder in an online auction run by Big Boyz Toys.

Images of the vehicle show it in yellow, matching Mr Dhoni’s playing colours from his time playing for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. However, it is the historic nature of the vintage model that clearly impressed the former wicketkeeper.

Mr Dhoni will be in good company among Land Rover fans in finding the Series 3 highly desirable. Of course, anyone who does manage to acquire one might find it is not always in perfect condition, especially under the bonnet after years of wear and tear.

That may be a good reason for owners to get in touch with Land Rover engine rebuild specialists to bring the whole package back to its original condition.

Mr Dhoni is not the only petrol head in the world of cricket, of course. After all, former England star Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff is one of the presenters of Top Gear.

Among those who are fans of Land Rovers is Jonathan Agnew, the former England player who has spent his retirement from playing as the BBC’s lead commentator in its Test Match Special radio programme.

He made headlines in the Northern Echo three years ago when driving up to Chester-le-Street in County Durham to commentate on an England game there, when his Land Rover Discovery suffered a puncture and he needed help at a service station in Catterick to enable him to get to the ground in time for the start of the game.
