Land Rover Defender 2021 SUV Of The Year

The New Land Rover Defender has been named as MotorTrend’s 2021 SUV of the Year, following a series of rigorous tests measuring performance of the contenders under controlled circumstances, allowing for evaluation of real-world driving behaviour of each vehicle.

In all, there were 28 new or redesigned or SUVs and variants being assessed in six criteria – safety, efficiency, value, advancement in design, performance of the intended function and engineering excellence.

The New Defender received praise for its excellent on-road comfort and handling, strong value compared to direct competitors and its active and passive safety features, as well as its renowned off-roading capabilities.

MotorTrend’s senior features editor Jonny Lieberman said: “\”There are certain vehicles you can feel are special after only 50 feet of driving. The Defender bowled us over with the wonderful synchronization of its stout engine and yeoman transmission, the exceptional ride quality, its ambient nature, the baked-in, go-anywhere capability and its amazing value.”

Responding to the news, president and CEO of Jaguar Land Rover North America Joe Eberhardt described it as a great achievement and an honour, thanking the engineers and designers for helping build a 21st century Defender that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Jaguar Land Rover also recently revealed that it is now investigating the possibilities of hydrogen power for its larger vehicles, researching the use of fuel cell technology for zero emissions versions of its model range. Project Zeus, as it is known, is in its infancy but the first concept car is expected to be an Evoque-sized SUV.
