Makeover For Best-Selling Range Rover Sport

Land Rover is planning to launch a brand-new version of the Range Rover Sport, Auto Express reports. Described as a ‘third generation’ model rather than a standard upgrade, the new version will feature different proportions, and a lot of detailed fine-tuning.

The current Range Rover Sport is one of the most popular premium SUVs available, with top-notch handling capabilities which belie its substantial proportions. The SVR model in particular is admired for its power, but the four and six-cylinder versions are perfectly capable of pulling their weight in a competitive market.

First introduced in 2005, the Range Rover Sport was intended as a more accessible version of the full-sized Range Rover, to compete with premium vehicles such as the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5. Early, heavy versions were based on the Land Rover Discovery, until a re-launch of a much lighter all-aluminium design in 2013.

The new version is the first upgrade for eight years, during which time it has remained the joint second best-selling Jaguar Land Rover model, just behind the Evoque. It has the option to add a third row of seats in the rear, in response to consumer demand for a seven-seater.

A range of four, six, and eight cylinder engines are available, with plug-in hybrid tech features. The 3.0 litre, six-cylinder D250, D300 and D350 diesel versions include a belt-driven starter generator and a 48v battery to improve overall efficiency, the Auto Express review explains.

The P400e plug-in hybrid combines a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol unit with an 85kW electric motor. This delivers a total of 398bhp. For an extra level of power and performance, the P575 SVR has a supercharged V8 engine with 567bhp.

The new model will have an overall sleeker look, and be available in a range of trim levels. The Pivi Pro infotainment set-up with an 11.4-inch central touchscreen is certain to be included in the interior of this next generation design.
