What Is The Difference Between A Restored And A Resto-Mod Vehicle?

Resto-mods are becoming increasingly fashionable cars these days, but what exactly are they, and what makes them different from a car that has simply been restored or repaired? Often, they don’t look much altered aesthetically, and the hard work is usually hidden behind the scenes.

Cars that have been restored, usually classic examples of a make and model, will have had work carried out to meet their factory specifications. All the parts used in the refurbishment will be original factory parts which have usually been painstakingly tracked down, sometimes to great expense of time and money.

If no ‘new old stock’ can be located, new parts are sometimes manufactured to the original specs. Either way, a great deal of time and labour goes into recreating a vehicle which is exactly the same as its brand-new condition. On the other hand, a resto-mod vehicle is a classic car which has been modified with aftermarket parts.

A recent example of this is the resto-mod 4×4 Range Rover Chieftain, as reported in Auto Express. The classic 40-year-old vehicle has been updated with fully independent double-wishbone suspension. The adaptation includes special mounts, allowing use of the Range Rover’s original differentials to maintain its outstanding off-road ability.

The original brakes have been upgraded with parts from the Discovery 3 and Range Rover Sport. The 3.5-litre Rover V8 has been replaced with the far more powerful 6.2-litre LS3 V8 from the Chevrolet Corvette. It is claimed the resto-mod vehicle can achieve 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 130mph.

On the outside, the changes in appearance to the new car are subtle, and will only be spotted by dedicated Range Rover fans. However, the resto-mod version is compliant with modern safety standards, and more powerful, whilst retaining the spirit of this much-loved classic vehicle.
